Somerset College recognises that the education of young people calls for an holistic approach. The academic, social, emotional, physical and spiritual well being of each individual needs to be monitored so that students are able to leave the College as well-balanced, well-rounded individuals. With this in mind, the College has a comprehensive pastoral care system in place.
At the core of this system are the tutors, each one overseeing a group of 12-15 students. Tutors are responsible for the overall development of the young people in their care and are the first port of call for parents and subject teachers who wish to raise concerns about a particular student. Tutors are guided and supported by Grade Heads who monitor the academic progress, classroom performance and social behaviour of each student in their Grade.
The school employs a full-time resident psychologist as well as three trained counselors. As well as assisting students with emotional problems, they also offer career guidance and academic testing. In addition, an occupational therapist works from the school’s premises to assist students with their academic performance by offering learner support in a number of areas.
Social issues and risks are discussed at tutor group meetings and in assemblies and chapel. From time to time, outside speakers are also brought in to address the student population on risks associated with teenagers, such as substance abuse and bullying. Policies on Substance Abuse, Bullying and HIV/Aids are in place to protect individual students, and academic support is available in the afternoons, particularly for Mathematics, Science and Afrikaans.
A Pastoral Care Committee meets regularly to review the College’s support system, and to identify areas in which individuals or groups of students may require further guidance.
