At the heart of the Senior School lies the academic programme, with both teachers and students constantly striving
for excellence in this arena. Although a young school, Somerset College is an academic leader in the Western Cape.
Somerset College has selected the
IEB as its Grade 9 and Matriculation examination provider, while following
the National Curriculum Statements published by the Department of Education.
Skills such as thinking, critical analysis, personal organisation, teamwork and communication are central to our teaching philosophy.
We believe that academic rigour is central to our learners' success both at school and later in places of higher
learning and in life. We conduct regular assessments in each subject and provide each student with quarterly progress reports.
The Senior School's varied subject choice caters for a wide range of tastes while retaining a strong academic focus.
Teachers keep up to date with their subject material by attending
IEB National and Western Cape conferences, and by being involved in Cluster Groups.
With a strong focus on academic excellence, our results speak for themselves. Over the past few years, between 25
and 35% of our Matric students have achieved 'A' Aggregates, with a 100% pass record intact since the first Matrics
of 1999. Furthermore, the past four years have seen Somerset College students reach the
IEB examination's national 'Top 50'.
