Pupils are exposed to music from Grade 000 to Grade 7. Grade 000, 00 and 0 participate in specialized 30 minute music classes per week. We concentrate on learning more about music through fun activities such as singing, movement, playing of Orff instruments and listening activities. Grades 1 to 7 have Class Music every week.
The Instrumental Programme for Grade 3s exposes pupils to a range of musical instruments. Each child is
given lessons on the violin, cello, clarinet, trumpet and djembe drum, and then takes the instruments home
to practice with. In this way pupils are able to see where their interest and talent lies,
and are in a position to enrol for formal lessons if they wish to do so.
The Preparatory offers individual tuition on a variety of instruments with lessons being integrated into the
school day. Individual pupils who excel are entered for Eisteddfods and external
examinations such as Trinity, Royal Schools and UNISA.
The Preparatory also gives music pupils the opportunity to play at school concerts both as soloists and as
part of an ensemble.
The Preparatory has two choirs - a Junior Choir (Grades 1 - 3) and a Senior Choir (Grades 4 - 7) that perform at
concerts and at various Eisteddfods. The pupils have a great deal
of fun on choir days and at the choir camp.
We believe that every pupil has the capacity for achievement in music, and it is a subject that contributes to
development in many learning areas. Pupils are taught according to their own individual ability, and
everyone is given the opportunity to perform at a music concert.
