Overview
The contents of the National Curriculum are central to the Preparatory's programme and we follow the guidelines laid down for each of the learning areas, namely:
- Languages (English, Afrikaans and Xhosa)
- Social Sciences (History and Geography)
- Technology
- Economic Management Sciences
- Mathematics
- Natural Sciences
- Arts and Culture (Music, Drama and Art)
- Life Orientation
In the Foundation Phase some of these subjects are clustered together.
Although each of these disciplines has its own importance and worth, we have found that cross-curricular themes integrate the curriculum and make it more relevant. This is particularly evident in computer lessons, where the school policy is to use the computer as an aid to the teaching and learning of all areas of the curriculum.
Assessment is an integral part of Outcomes Based Education and pupils are assessed in many different ways throughout the year, ensuring that different learning styles and abilities are fully recognised.We believe that by continuously assessing our pupils they will come to understand and appreciate the importance of giving their best in everything they do.
Our reporting system gives full feedback on the various outcomes that have been achieved by the pupils, as well as the results of summative assessments. Personal and social development is extremely important, and as such, individual comments on all aspects of the pupils' growth included in the report. In addition, parents are invited to meet the teachers individually each term to discuss their child's progress, and portfolios are displayed at the end of the third term.
