The Grade 5 vegetable garden

The Grade 5 classes in the Prep school started a vegetable garden two years ago. This is our third year running this lovely project.  The pupils are expected to prepare the soil with compost, plan their garden mathematically and plant their seeds. This extension of the Science curriculum gives them a practical opportunity to learn about plants and insects.  They also manage their own worm farms and use the worm tea and compost in their gardens. This is the only form of pesticide and fertilizer we use.  Our veggies are 100% organic!  There is much excitement when our seedlings start sprouting. The pupils nurture their gardens by frequent weeding and watering. It is a very enriching project.

This year we decided to sell our veggies at the farmer's market on a Friday.  A group of enthusiastic Grade 5 moms joined us in this venture. They are currently managing the harvesting, packaging and selling of our veggies.  We also supply veggies to the school kitchen and tuck shop.  The grade 5 pupils will use the money earned to purchase a much needed wheelbarrow and other gardening equipment. We also hope to build our own greenhouse in the near future.
